How GPA is calculated

Each grade is converted to grade points, multiplied by the course’s credits, then the total is divided by total credits. A 4-credit B (3.0) counts more than a 3-credit A- (3.7). Cumulative GPA does the same across every term: (previous GPA × previous credits + this term’s points) ÷ all credits.

Canadian scales differ

There’s no single Canadian GPA scale. Many universities use 4.0 or 4.33; York uses a 9-point scale; some schools use a 12-point scale; and percentage cut-offs for each letter vary. Check your school’s official conversion before relying on a number for scholarships or applications.

Frequently asked questions

Is an A+ worth more than an A?

On 4.33, 9- and 12-point scales, yes. On the standard 4.0 scale, both are 4.0.

How do I convert a percentage to GPA?

Choose “Percentage…” as the grade and type your mark. It uses a common Canadian letter mapping (85–89% = A, 80–84% = A-), which varies by school.

Do pass/fail courses count?

Usually not. Leave them out unless your school says otherwise.
